butterflydreaming: a few crafts that I made as gifts (Get Excited Make Things)

I'm sort of frustrated with how this climactic scene, where the main character loses her sh*t, is a lot like the climactic scene from "Take Comfort." OK, yes -- I have a thing for (rightfully) depressed, white-haired protagonists who have nervous breakdowns when it all becomes too much, and run off while everyone stands around open-mouthed. But does the emotional beat have to be the same?

Anyway... it plays out differently, that's good. And I didn't like the chapter-ending similarity, so I've gone back and changed how the chapter breaks in "EoC". Plus, the narrative pacing in the next chapter is completely different from "TC" now -- breaking to catch up with another character, versus continuing the scene from the "cliff hanger" -- so I've probably done what I can here.

It's something to think about, though, in regards to my other white-haired protagonist (Jouet, original fiction) who... runs off after a terrible shock. D: Wellllll. Which kind of makes me realize how fast she would go from my-heart-has-been-ripped-to-shreds to I'm-going-to-rip-someone-to-shreds instead of the bleakness originally drafted. Disgust at the betrayal by a human, rather than heartbreak, makes a lot more sense on her path to villainy.

I have to completely rewrite Stadium anyway, not just because it's tripe but because I am smitten with the idea of the earlier Jouet story about solving her father's murder. Which I'm not allowed to start while everything else is in such shambles.

I'm embracing the fact of life that I'm a slow writer, but that even as a slow writer, I can consistently produce 2,000 - 10,000 good, if not great, words per month for two years, on a single project, and have something worth reading. It's possible that I'm justifying how much fanfic I write, but then, I like writing fanfic. I just want to get that magic ratio where I write more orig than 'fic, so that the original work is developed enough to share (here).

2K to 10K of wordage per month is awesome as far as I'm concerned!

As for similar emotional beats, I def notice this in my own writing as well & I think it may be only natural, as our characters come from us & reflect aspects of us, Char A and Char B may exhibit similar tendencies. (I've noticed a few distinct "personality types" who keep popping up in my stories.) But as you noted, the same or similar emotional beats can play out totally different in different stories. Which is a v good thing!
