Food -- fancy coffee from a place I love, ice cream, bacon, guilty-pleasure restaurant food -- is an easy way for me to reward myself, to give myself a little present for getting through the rough spots. There have been a lot of rough spots lately, and consequently, that reward is getting overdone. The whole point of treats is that they are rare.

What else makes a good reward? It can't be a big expense, or even feel like much of an expense, since being broke is a little too present on my mind.

Time works for me — a spin through the Frey Museum (free) or an afternoon of reading in the park under the trees instead of doing chores. A ride on the ferry is another one.

the small bath bombs from Bliss
shiny hair gizzies (drugstore or dollar store)
odd-colored pens
stickers
those wee beanie animals the Hmong ladies sell at the market
a trip to the Art-o-mat at Venue. (they also have a cheaper machine that is full of those plastic balls. items include smashed pennies drilled to use as charms.)
a bargain matinee or a trip to the Crest or the Admiral
a trip to a park you do not usually visit
the Frye Museum

Some of my old tricks:

Get out a map of the area, look for places you haven't been, and go take a walk there. Bonus -- you'll get a workout without feeling like you had to exercise. It's the opposite of using food as a treat.

Go to a library that makes me feel great and get some reading and writing done. Suzallo at UW is interesting.

More crafting, since you're very good at it and already have most of the materials.

Look through the events section and find a lecture/book reading/etc that's free.

Sit down and write out your goals including some that are easily accomplished in a few hours. Then go through and do then. You'll feel great as you accomplish crossing them off your list.

These are a few of my favorites:

A glass of wine in a bubble bath.

New hair accessories.

A new pair of comfy socks or sexy underwear (or the other way around)

A walk in the woods.

Or a trip to the library.

Massages. Is it possible you have an "in' there?

A new book or cd makes me pretty happy.

Making myself extra-tasty french-press coffee instead of usual tasty drip.

Several sheets of special paper and a pretty pen - I usually write a letter with it, or a poem on it.

A decent bottle of wine sipped from my prettiest glass outside somewhere at sunset or full dark to stargaze

A new CD or download (I recently got ani Difranco's Canon which is all kinds of sparkly) Perhaps a friend might make you a mix CD with some of it and flobots too? You'd only need to say yea and she'd be quite happy to do it, in fact it would be like a treat for her too.

Oh and dilletante has these mini boxes of chocolates - together with a nice red wine or some coffee? heaven.
