Merry Christmas! And folklore for you!

What I would really like to do is post one of the two (short) stories that I have not had time to write more than a few pages (handwritten) of.  Instead, I will give you the background folklore for the (hopefully) funny one.

There is a legend that on midnight of Christmas Eve, beasts are given the gift of speech.

To praise the birth of Christ.

Imagine what they really say.

(Tanya Huff used this briefly in the Summoning series.)

"Dammit, why hasn't that b**** cleaned the litter box? And what happened to my food? Ack! That *thing*! It will destroy us all. I shall slay it!"
*attackes twistie*
"Success. And now, celebratory eating. What happened to my food?"

XD.

"That guy! Before he came along, we were safe, more or less, what with the hoof thing and all. And then this guy, this nobody, stands up and says that it doesn't matter if you eat us or not! Excuse me! I bloody well think it mattered to us!"
"Jumped-up simian, really. Ideas above his station. No good comes of getting ideas above your station."

Alright, so I fail at funny. I would like to see your actual good humor, though.

Today's not that cold. Maybe I should get out of my wool burrow. But it feels so nice here, warm and full of food.

Humans are particularly loud tonight. It smells like flesh and sea creatures. Strange race, they are, those who live outside the cage.

They opened the trapdoor, I see through a hole on my nest. Ah, what a lovely nut. When they calm down, I'll get out and grab it. I need to gnaw and clean my teeth, they've grown a little. Alas, I'm sleepy.

And they always make such a fuss if they find me out at winter.

Man, my back is killing me. Do you know how far a walk it is from Galilee to Bethlehem? Well neither do I, but it feels interminable when you've got a huge pregnant chick on your back most of the way.
