Furious 6

Of all the things I thought I might say about the sixth installment in the Fast & the Furious movies, it was not this: this movie more evenly, fairly, and respectfully presents women and ethnic diversity than... than... any movie that I have seen lately?

Really!

There are FIVE significant, named, female characters, more than one third of the main cast. Four kick a** and one is a mom who makes a sensible decision when things go oval shaped. They all keep their clothes on at all times. I would not have been *sad* if Gina Carano had shown more skin, but I can Google Images and call it good. (It's lovely. In the top 10 photos she is in boxing gear OR in something more traditionally sexy. Sort of sums up her PR.) The women are all capable. There is a fight scene that you would only call a girl fight if you didn't watch the fight. (Brutal!)

Compare that to Into Darkness and the infamous cheesecake shot. Yeah. Plus the cat tail girls. (Really?!)

Both fail the Bechdel Test, interestingly enough. With Furious 6, it feels like they didn't need a one-to-one conversation moment. With ST:ID, it felt like it never occurred to them to check for it, because they have !RebootUhura.

So, I wouldn't normally recommend a movie like 6, but it has a lot going for it. Action? Oh, yeah. Laugh out loud action? Yup, it definitely has a couple of those! They were great! Plot? Yes, really! Heart? Uh-huh. Family is the strong theme running through it. Characters? If you don't already love some of these characters, I don't know. But I haven't seen all the movies, so many of the characters were new to me, and I loved the ensemble dynamic. Romance? It won't be most people's idea of romance, yet Vin Diesel plays Dom like a human being, and it worked for me.

Yesterday I went to the nicest movie theater in Seattle, the Majestic Bay, to see (after much delay) Brokeback Mountain. It made me more angry than sad, in a Moby-esque "Everything is Wrong" kind of way. An excellent movie, not over-hyped, well-made and subtle in the right places.

It seems unbalanced to recommend another same-sex-love movie in the same breath, but last week I saw Imagine Me & You, which is complete fluff by comparison... but not the stupid fluff it might seem to be, if you take away the comparison with an Academy Award level film. I kind of can't stand the Beatles, but the story follows right out of the song as if the song were a story prompt; it's kind of funny.

I can recommend this movie because it has character depth created by the quality of the acting. I suspect that the script would be garbage without that. The dialog would have been unmercifully predictable had I not been completely charmed by the performances. Anthony Stuart Head (Giles, from BtVS -- do I even need to tell you that?) plays the father in a wonderfully vague, distracted, rumpled way. He had me spilling a few tears, but then, I always cry at the wrong things, don't I?

Oh, and that one has a happy ending, in a believable way.

You're a wanker, Number 9.

In other news, there is a GINORMOUS cat at L's workplace. He was abandoned a few days ago, left in a carrier in the back hallway with an expensive-looking knit blanket. He weighs over 23 pounds without being fat, has a head as big as a Fuji apple, and is bright-eyed and gentle. Unlike most abandoned cats, he isn't acting angry and resentful. He has a better personality than my Aya.

There is a high likelyhood that he's part wildy, but since the illegality of that mix would be a death sentence for him, we're saying he's just, y'know, a very big silver tabby with a manx tail. No tufts on the ears, thankfully.

Should you feel inclined to come out and see him, there is West 5 next door, and Elliott Bay Brewery across the street, and W.Seattle's Matador... and Tom Yum Koon Thai... and Than Bro.s Pho, with their options of meat, seafood, & vegetarian pho, down the street... .

The days, when I think "It's still raining", are good days to make a nest in the living room out of floor pillows and blankets and watch movies. I rarely know anything about the movies available (the exceptions, now, are the SIFF films) because I haven't seen most of the previews; I don't have television, listen to the radio far to little since I'm not driving, and don't go to the movies as often anymore. (I don't really know why; it's been a self-perpetuating cycle.) So I will admit that I rented The Island because it had Ewan in it, and since Moulin Rouge I have this thing about wanting to see his eyes do that sparkling, lighted thing. The Island & Saving Face as a rainy-day double feature )

It's a weekend for movies. In addition to the Kung Fu line-up, we picked up one at random about Egyptian gods in an urban AU setting. I expect it to be extremely bad, hopefully an Underworld kind of bad.
