"I Seem to Have Proved Useful After All"

Of course you do not know. How could you know
When I can smile as if I am content,
Paint moons and rainbows o'er my heart's lament,
And hide my wails in veils and in shadow?
In truth, I've fiercely wished to let it go
To no avail -- by dreaming's claws I'm rent
And drowned within a current never spent:
The silent and bewildered tears that flow.
And you, innocent of what I confess,
Hold his interest as I never could,
So I will try to keep you from my mess;
Even in the tremblings of my distress
I sincerely will call this pairing good
And count your ignorance as a kindness.
