The rain that is falling right now in the U District is what I think of as "real" Seattle rain, albeit on the heavy side. The drops are almost mist. They are difficult to see, except as a general sort of blur. Put your hand out and you (almost) can't feel them. This is rain for hoodies, the gusts cold enough that you'll want some layers.

It doesn't seem to justify the hassle of an umbrella. Besides, those gusts have bumbershoot flipping enthusiasm.

I've grown to like this rain, though the gray Aprils are what kept me from moving here, at first, though my family kept urging me. I guess I wouldn't like it so much if I didn't know that this is spring, just the way spring is: too long and not warm enough.

But the homeless guys have started sleeping outside again, an indication of the warming weather. Summer is coming, and we have glorious summers.

Seattle's climate is very like Vancouver's, and we have so many different kinds of rain, it's frustrating to have so few distinct words to differentiate between them, and instead have to launch into long (and admittedly beautiful) descriptions like this one.

I know exactly the kind of rain you are describing.

Last night we had its diametric opposite: rain so fat and heavy it seems to fall extra-fast and with extra force, which makes it bounce off the roads and sidewalks. It overwhelms road camber and sweeps debris ahead of it to drainage covers, and hoist on its own petard it gathers in swiftly-widening puddles. I love that kind of rain when I don't have to be out in it. :)

Exactly! I love the feeling of being inside, warm and dry, when there's awful weather outside.

You're making me a lil nostalgic for my days in the U District...

That's what I think of as Seattle rain, as well. Though we've been getting a lot of the other kind this month. I've actually used an umbrella a few times.
