Summary:
tl;dr: Oh, tumblr.
A wacky tumblr thing happened after "Don't Hug Me I'm Scared 2" came out. (If you don't know what this is, be warned before you watch it. You may prefer to read the TVTropes entry for explanation.) A bored artist, Aishaneko, painted the notepad from DHMIS 1 and the clock from DHMIS 2 as human versions. Notepad is a pretty girl with colored hair, black "paint drip" arms and legs, a white dress with the various notepad designs on its skirts, and a maniacal white face. The clock is a ravishing man in a slightly military or nautical uniform, with a clock-hand sword, and blue face with a similar gleeful insane expression.
This started an enthusiasm for these characters depicted in this style. In no time, they were a couple, 'ship name "padlock." Fanart of these characters sprang up with such vigor that other tumblr users complain about not tagging and how it has "taken over their dash."
I have to admit that I like the original art, a lot. I sort of like the fandom, because they've taken a tangent and run with it full speed. There is an excellent playlist (fanmix) on 8tracks. And actually, I enjoy the short films more each time I watch them.
The thing is, I've been wanting to write a coffee shop AU for something for a while. Ever since someone in the Pacific Rim fandom made the comment that the coffee shop AU is a merit badge for the fandom. I tried to write the characterizations closer to the way they are in the films, rather than as a couple of nutcases in love.
So, yeah. I did a thing. (Writing or doing beadwork, all day. My hands hurt.)
