D is required to acquire continuing education hours, and a class he took yesterday was about using cupping (link w/o the photos to reduce squick) for massage. He came home with a newtoy tool -- the box might say "As Seen on TV" in Chinese -- and some amazing ruddy, round marks on his back and arms.
I'd already agreed to be a practice subject.
I don't bruise easily. The marks on my arms are gone. My back is another story. Also, the big dot over my sternum is still there. They don't hurt like bruises, and getting them didn't feel like getting a hickie, really. They are not sore or tender to the touch. They're just colorful. They don't even look like the results of cuddling something with big tentacles, because the circles aren't a ring, but a filled-in dot. They feel a little like rug burn.
I said "ow!" a lot, and loudly. He's a right bastard (can be) with his deep tissue work normally as it is. Using the cups made some interesting differences, both more sadistic and differently effective. I think it's great for my shoulders, where I store a lot of tension that never gets fully worked out.
There's always a trade off with massage. Usually, it's just what happens to your hair.
