It's still morning in Hawaii.

I am clinging to the last portion of my weekend with a miserly grip.
I want to say that afternoon rock shows are ideal for me, because I get to stay for the whole show without needing a car to get home. We saw Rocky Votolato at the Crocodile yesterday. He's on tour now that his CD is out. I strongly recommend seeing him; he's an excellent live performer, very charming & still a down-to-earth guy. His music has a masculine passion, and while the stories in them are sometimes sad, sometimes desperate, you can still get the sense of a person who is not dragged down by his history. I have a favorite song already, one that has a slightly Desperado feel to it; I don't know the name of it, but I'm betting it's going to be the single... if it's not one that got cut. (Shh. I'm not supposed to have heard it before if it *was* cut.)
The opening bands were pretty good, too. Slender Means was described to me as something like a blend of The Smiths and U2. They have a good sound. While I can hear the influence of Morrissey in the singer's style, the band has it's originality. They played a pleasing mix of upbeat and languid rock. J.Tillman, the other opener, also has a great voice, and some pretty good songs; my complaint with him was that they were of too similar a tone. (Think of Chris Isaak's Heart Shaped World. Music to stay in bed by.)
I've had too much sugar today (baked a coffee cake with almond meal partly subbing in for flour, and brandied nectarines for filling) and I haven't left the apartment at all! Oooh, and I just discovered that it is sometimes worthwhile to have the volume up a little -- I usually keyboard in silence -- because the Slender Means site has their music playing, wheee!
Another advantage to afternoon/early evening shows at the Crocodile (nicely smoke-free now!) is that they are all-ages before 9. That meant that yesterday, the over 21/booze holders section of the floor was netted off, and there were less of us than the under 21s, so I got to be close & not crowded.
While waiting for the bus,
divinityof_fire and I were drive-by complimented, but the guys didn't pull over or offer a ride or any such. Cowards. What's the point Where's the fun in that?
Happy Year 4704!

And leaving your home is overrated, anyway.
