3) STRAWBERRY DAYS BY DAVID NEIWERT
On Saturday at 2 p.m., David Neiwert, author of "Strawberry Days: How Internment Destroyed a Japanese American Community", will give a special program on the stage in the Gym. "Strawberry Days" is an account of the prewar Eastside Nikkei farming community, how it thrived in the 1920s and '30s, and was essentially wiped out of existence by the confluence of socioeconomic forces and the internment of Japanese American citizens during World War II. Compiled over 14 years, it features a wealth of interviews with many of these Eastside pioneers and carefully explains their story. Bolstered by deep archival research, it provides a careful historical overview of the events leading to the internment and its aftermath.
Neiwert will lead a special program bringing together many of the original interviewees from Bellevue, and he will try to explain each of their stories as part of a larger mosaic of Bellevue's early history. The program will both honor these pioneers and, we hope, educate the audience about the depths of their contribution and the significance of their story even today.

Date: 2005-09-02 08:17 pm (UTC)As for NYC, the chances of getting parental units to take the train up with me is slim. I think they just expect the culture to just trickle down, or something.
I wanted to have the (now defunct) anime club put together a matsuri, but no such
fundsluck.
