varina8! I am so delighted by them that I'm even going to play by the rules. If you would like Five Questions from me, leave a comment and I will come up with some for you. However, if you're going to answer them at all, I don't want wishy-washy or pedantic answers.
You are stranded on island with a portable CD player, what three discs would you bring and why?
1.
-Yo-Yo Ma, Bach Cello Suites: Not only is this composition beautiful, but I also think of it as a soundtrack. My introduction to the Cello Suites was through a series of short movies, shown as a series on PBS. (My favorite was one called Falling Down Stairs.) I like the way Yo-Yo Ma plays. His attitude is not the dry, formal manner of the usual classical performer; he has a playful and youthful style that reaches me. To me, his cello sounds like a voice.
-Souxsie & the Banshees, Greatest Hits: I can't take the whole library, so Hits will have to do. Since I would be alone, the CDs would take the place of companionship. Souxsie's bold, melodic voice would be the representative of female voices. "Dazzle" is certainly my favorite, but with "Face to Face", I get Danny Elfman, too (he wrote that one).
-Morrissey, You Are the Quarry: I feel a little guilty about picking Morrissey's new one over any old Smiths, but his developed vocal ability really shows on this one. I think all of the songs are wonderful, but "Let Me Kiss You" (actually written for Nancy Sinatra to sing) sends me into a trance-like rapture. On a deserted island, I will let Morrissey represent male voices.
I notice one of your interests in anime. How would you describe yourself if you were an anime character?
This is my absolute favorite question!
2.Not unlike my favorite anime character, Yue from Card Captor Sakura, I would be dual natured. One side would be cute, the kind of character that gets starry-eyed, gets cat-ears & a tail, or goes chibi often. I would be bouncy, wear a sailor fuku (middle school/high school uniform) and Mary Janes. I would be Chinese (probably from Hong Kong) because the Chinese ones are always rude or a little strange, and for the same reason, I would have straight, light-colored (silver or white) hair. The silver-haired ones are always trouble and usually have a secret. Most of the time, my eye color would be tea-brown.
The other side of my nature would be dangerous, an assassin and probably a vampire -- certainly inhuman. In this guise, my eye color would show truly as an inky red, a passionate and mad color. I would know of my twin nature but would not angst about it... much. My weapon of choice would be some kind of blade, and as the villian that I would most assuredly be, I would be "the Licker" -- that character that feels the need to lick his dagger, knife, etc. I would be tortured by some kind of unrequited love triangle that included both aspects of my duality and the hero/heroine's best friend.
My name(s) would probably be something like Màn Zi (Veil) and Yǐng Zi (Shadow).
What is tlilxochitl?
3.Tlilxochitl is an old name for vanilla, meanining literally "black flower" (tlil=black, xochitl=flower). (I knew a girl named Xochitl. It's pronounced like "social".) This is how it was called by those who saw it already dried and cured. Because of its rich fragrance, they thought it was a flower. The harvesters of vanilla kept the true nature a secret.
If you could give your 10-year-old self one piece of advice, what would it be?
4. "Climb trees, then read." I've never been an especially active person, and the thing I've always loved most to do was curl up somewhere with a book. Sadly, I've never actually climbed a tree... but then, I am afraid of heights. So if I could prod 10-year-old me, who already had a good start into puberty, to walk to the park and find a place to read in the limbs of a tree, it would accomplish the dual goal of developing a habit of exercise and an earlier start to confronting my phobia.
If you could live anywhere else, where would it be and why?
5.Hawaii, specifically the big island, which I haven't visited yet. Hawaii, the state, has two of the things that I don't think I can live without: mountains and ocean. Across all of the islands there is a vast variety of terrain. I wouldn't lack for places to hike, and my swimming strength would certainly improve. I could live happily on fruit and fish; Kona coffee is delicious. More guys would find my looks attractive. There are a lot of Catholics there -- not that I'm practicing, but the common basis would be nice, sometimes. (For example, a co-worker today asked me, "Are you religious?" because she wanted to know if she would be expected to bring a gift to a baptism.) And I like all the little grottos with statues of Virgin Mary in them.
If I could afford to live there, I think I would like the slower pace and simpler way of living. It would make my father really happy; Hawaii is one of his favorite places. I'm living in Seattle instead of Hawaii because here, I have a job. If I had a skill that I thought would carry over to the other state, or if something was set up before the move, I would make the move, at least on a trial basis. I'm no stranger to wanderlust.
