Walk Into Light

I haven't done color for a while.
Now if only I could set the font to Garamond, I'd be truly happy. (Anyone know how?)
I've spent the morning cleaning, and trying to catch a story. I've been cleaning out all the dust, soot, and candlewax from my fireplace. It's an appropriate Solstice activity, since I want to replace all the candles and possibly fill the oil lamps as well, though I think that what they really need are new wicks. (Everlasting wicks, ha!) The dirty work has all been done; I'm just taking a break from being on my knees. (Catholic, though, so I can take it.)
No sign of kurokurosukes, but I left the fireplace doors open while I was in the kitchen setting up that odd, circular candelabra... and I'm sure something else got in. The icks have been especially active this year. Add to that that what I'm doing smacks of ceremonial, at a hearth that was once used for magic of an oily sort, and... yeah. Will have to teach the newcomer the Rules.
The Rules being one: contribute positively or get out.
I'm in the mood to write a seasonal story, a Christmas story of some kind, and I have one that is just staying teasingly out of reach. I'm trying to avoid yet another story that ends in a death, which, no matter what tone I'm writing in, seems to keep happening. {is embarrassed} Right now, honestly, I have too many things on the Desk. I'm starting to feel like I never finish anything. It's been so long since I've actively thought about Key that I just realized that I'm not sure what Carmen's husband's name is.
I'll see what today brings, once I finish arranging candles and do some shopping. (No, of course I haven't finished.) And go to the grocery store. I want to bake something today; it's too cold in here and needs some good smells. I haven't done any gingerbread this year... .
I thought of putting out an open invitation for a bonfire on Alki beach tonight, but then, I figured that no one would come. It's quite cold already, and it looks like it wants to snow, or storm.
And because I can never promote Tanya Huff enough --
If you can find a copy of What Ho, Magic! there is a wicked Christmasy story in it. You'll never look at a Christmas tree angel the same way again.

Date: 2004-12-21 10:51 pm (UTC)I also ADORE Tanya Huff. You mention a book I haven't read of hers. I boggle, I drool.
Another Catholic with magic influences. I run into a lot of them.
*nods*
Happy Solstice. When are you free? Somehow raw fish can be a holiday food!

Date: 2004-12-22 02:38 am (UTC)The Catholic mass is the closest thing to sorcery in "mainstream" religions.
Maybe next week could work? Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday are wide open, Boxing Day pm and Thursday pm are negotiable. Where do you like to go?

Date: 2004-12-22 07:04 am (UTC)The weekend is so packed I've had to duct tape some plans to the side to make them fit. However, the following Wednesday sounds super. :)

Date: 2004-12-22 12:03 am (UTC)Maybe your holiday story should be called "Everlasting Wicks."
Re: snowing or storming: Last night, walking to Dilettante post-acting-class, I felt like the air smelled a little like snow. It was just on the edge of the air's bite. We may yet see some, which wouldn't upset me at all.

Date: 2004-12-22 07:26 am (UTC)^^ All of what you wrote sounded so good! Baking this time of year is so nice... The cold taste of snow with the warm sweetness of cookies. All poetic and fuzzy.
