Interesting! I saw the ending as more hopeful. To avoid spoilers, let me say, when he makes the decision to let go of the past and sit with the present moment, I felt he had at last fully entered his new life. In the moment he was feeling the beauty of that new place. Though I don't know what will happen to him but I have faith in his resilience.
