"I'll Keep a Room..."

I’ll keep a room for you inside my heart
A space that will be all yours
Well… not an entire room --
But certainly, a spot beneath a sunny window
With a comfortable chair to sit
And a small, sturdy table to set your glass.
Except when the cat wants to nap
on a softer bed than on the sill
And, of course, you’ll have to share the room
With the ghosts of my past loves,
And my daydreams,
And those who come and go
Turning my head, and catching my eye.
I’ll give you the key to my heart
(Though I keep a copy above the lintel,
or in a potted plant beside the door)
So that should you wish to visit
You will always find it open…
Except when I’ve turned all the locks
And latched the bar.
Then, my dear,
You’ll have to knock
Loud enough for me to hear you.
