Besides Sushi Night:

I'm back from a meet-up with
buhrger, which is likely to be but hopefully won't be the only visit while he's here in Seattle. We tromped around Lincoln Park after a yummy lunch at Royal India, where today the gulab jamun are Italian and the rice pudding is French.
(Or so the ladels indicated. ^_~ )
We walked past Colman Pool. I am reminded that I still have not had a swim there. Where is that swimsuit?
Something is very strange... because there was no chocolate. I didn't notice the lack until just now. It's a bit upsetting, like declaring more planets in the solar system.
Since I haven't been posting about much recently, I caught him up on recent events and occasions, and now I'll do the same for you, with some more.
A week a go I went in for a doctor's appointment of the tune-up & oil change variety. I finally have a primary care provider and am making use of my medical insurance. KP bullied me into it a few weeks ago, bless her. She made the initial phone calls herself and then had me talk to Virginia Mason and set up my info & appointment time. She has been using Virginia Mason in Issaquah and helping me out has helped her get herself switched to the closer location. If you know of anyone looking for a doctor, I highly, highly recommend them. Everyone from the first phone call onward has been kind and helpful. The cluster of buildings are confusing; I had to ask for directions. (Their map is online. I should have checked first but forgot.) I met some of the nicest nurses, especially self-admitted nerd Julie Marie. My doctor is gentle and professional and sees patients on Saturdays.
Height and weight were unexpected. The scale at my friend's house was very much *not* calibrated when I stepped on it. (I don't have one, myself.) Also, I seem to have grown slightly taller since my last doctor's visit (it has been long enough). They didn't have to replace any gears or springs; those all appeared to be in working order.
That was a, ah, interesting start to a day that finished with a scrumptious dinner at Teapot, a vegan place on Broadway, and the DeVotchKa concert at Neumos. I recommend the Bo Bo Platter (it has fire) from Teapot and I do not recomment either of the opening acts that played before DeVotchKa. The opening act for Depeche Mode was worse, but only because they were so amplified. Really, it was painful. I wanted to drag the 2nd act out into the street and beat him with a rhyming dictionary. He felt it necessary to rhyme, but has no talent for lyrics. If he had kept his mouth shut, he might have been pretty good. His guitar work seemed okay. There was no saving the first opening act, she is too depressed. Possibly because she has such a terrible haircut.
L had beer spilled on her and the same jerk started a shoving match that may or may not have anything to do with his dousing of another woman (her hair was dripping). Unfortunately, this was while DeVotchKa was onstage; fortunately, it died down before it became a ruckus. The snoodly couple in front of me (the girl was vastly uninterested in the music) kept backing up into me. By the end of the night, I was bordering homicidal and remembering that I hate people. Nevertheless, I love DeVotchKa. They are so polished. Their songs are witty and beautiful.
I think the tetanus, etc. vaccine made me a little sick all week. It's been harder to get up in the mornings, I've been tired and muscle-achey, and on Thursday I had a wicked headache from mid-afternoon onward. That was (of course!) the night for Snakes on a Plane. I don't like the Cinerama much; I think it's an overrated theater. There were three broken seats in the row we were in... including my seat, the less-busted of the lot... and the last time I was there, my location was too far to the side and too far forward for the sound to be anything but ear-bleeding. I had serious doubts about staying, but I went directly after work to wait in line because there were reports that a line had started already. Uh, it was the same 8 or so people who had been there for the last 36 hours, when I arrived. So, uselessly early. Around 7:30,
queenpasiphae and
divinityof_fire and I darted away and
spazzychic & cronies were good enough to stay and keep the place in line, which mattered at that point. I was still considering leaving. The apple pie a la mode at Icon Grill helped. Icon has amusing decor that includes a TV in the ladies WC playing black & white movie clips.
As we left to return to the Cinerama we saw
samildanach &
llynecat heading out on a Coldstone run.
I'm glad I did stay. The movie was entertaining, the audience more so. Snakes on a Plane isn't "screamingly" bad after all, it's not as low-brow as the movies in the previews. It is aware of it's own ridiculousness and makes good use of it. The best comparision I can come up with is Scream. It's not a movie that I would recommend to someone who doesn't already have an interest in it. There is a cleverness to it that I didn't expect. The body count is high, but the death toll actually serves a purpose greater cinematic carnage.
It's been a food week. I've been eating very well, from gourmet to lunch take-out to happy hour and dinner. Food is a lovely thing, but I think I'll go back to simplicity for a week or so and make sure to pack my lunch.
A salon & massage business has opened on the first floor of the building in which I work. I see an after-work chair massage or facial in my future.
