Heh. The closest book to me with a blue cover is Fowler's Modern English Usage:

"checquer, checker. The first spelling is very much commoner in Britain for both the noun and the verb. The U.S. game checkers is the British draughts."

I did not know that! I don't know what I imagined draughts was, but certainly not checkers.
