I think it also reflects a cultural squeamishness about dirt that gets reflected in so many things from overpackaged food to female hygiene. This idea of having to sort and launder rags that have been used to wipe toilet seats, etc makes a lot of people uncomfortable. With my rag bin under the sink and my feather duster in the closet, I often feel like a complete anachronism.
