This morning: a long, meandering dialog (D adding in the occassional Word Edgewise) with my dad, over coffee and flakey pastry. We are at Le Panier, taking up residence at a table, but well timed for when there are enough seats to match the flow of customers.
If I hadn't known him my whole life, if I hadn't realized last night that I'm playing my late mother's role of angel's advocate, I suppose I might be riled up by my dad's idea of conversation. He is trying to get my goat, but out of habit. For twenty minutes or so, I make the mistake of trying to present facts and support for my viewpoints, in order to sway his thinking. I'm not trying to be right. Unfortunately, he is.
Finally he says, "because I know I am right!" And I belatedly realize that this conversation is simply noise to fill the time. We were never having a discussion toward mutual enlightenment or edification.
What were we arguing about?
.
"Which came first, the chicken or the egg?"
I am not even kidding. When the topic was slavery and started to edge toward a precipice, I threw in that diversion. How was I to know that he would disregard that I was only relating a recent decision based on chicken vs chicken egg? What a ridiculous conversation.
