Become Aware. Notice.
Jan. 20th, 2009 06:46 pmAh, my fellow countrymen. Could you not prove me wrong by picking up your trash when the ceremony was over? After a speech about responsibility, you leave the place full of your litter.
Bad habits typically go unnoticed by the person who has them. Think of all the drivers who go ballistic at other drivers, yet themselves do things like turn right on a red while still looking left (thus nearly running over the pedestrian who has right of way to cross)? We all gripe about other people when we are far from perfect ourselves.
If you are like me, you probably think you are already doing your best with the resources (time, energy, willingness) that you have. I challenge you now as I challenge myself, to find something More. Find one more way to make the world better, and work on it.
Here's a list to get the ideas going! Add more to the list!
Energy conservation
Water conservation
Reduction of chemicals in the home (that go into water waste or solid waste)
Reduction of packaging waste and food waste.
Read the label to see where the item was manufactured.
Eat further down the food chain.
Smile at strangers.
Make time for friends.
Make new friends/make the effort.
Learn what is actually recyclable in your area. Don't leave tape on boxes.
Buy recycled and reused.
Reduce or stop using single use items, such as paper towels and plastic party cups. Stop using straws. You don't need a lid, really.
Interact outside of your clique/tribe/safe zone.
Discuss your beliefs.
Consider "yes" before automatic "no". Consider "why?" before automatic agreement.
Contemplate justice.
