As the spirits that ran freely last night returned across the borders this morning, before sunrise, my mum went, too. Her spirit disentangled from pain and sickness and went on to a reunion with God.
My mother didn't believe in a classic heaven. She would say that she believed that we came from the life force that was God -- God as a deity, not a metaphor -- and would return to Him again when we died. As He is in everything, and everything is in Him, so would our souls be when not in a physical body. My mother loved science, and science fiction. She loved to read, loved to discuss and debate myriad topics. She didn't see a conflict between science and faith. Raised in a Jesuit school, she also loved theological questioning. I only knew her to be sure in her faith and loyal to the Catholic Church that she knew had problems. She believed on changing it from the inside. She witnessed a miracle, and she saw a ghost once.
She did believe in Judgment, and there she and I have a point of agreement again.
( What I more or less believe about what happens after )
I know I will miss my mother, many times in days to come. She gave me more than my life, and for all that she gave me, I am thankful.
(Comments blocked because now is not a good time for discussion. We can come back to beliefs, down the road.)
