Most of all, I don't see the romance as the end. What good is falling in love with someone unless there are further adventures?
I get the romance structure, where the admission of love is a turning point, but then... you get married and have a couple of kids and live boringly ever after? Meh. (Disclaimer 1: I'm not saying getting married and having kids in itself is boring.)
Falling in love is cool, but I have to say the being-and-staying in love stuff has been a much more interesting story.
