For most of their childhoods, the children of my (otherwise intelligent) oldest brother were told that October 31st is "the Devil's birthday", and they did not dress up, go trick-or-treating, etc. I suspect that my neffers & nieces were smart enough, themselves, to realize that Mom and Dad were... perhaps not being truthful... since they don't seem to be scarred by it. Last year, they all went trick-or-treating, with Mom and Dad's approval and encouragement.

I'm not entirely sure what happened to change things. (There was a major family upheaval.) They're still Christians, but they mellowed out in good places.

"The Devil's birthday", for crying out loud! I always wanted to know who started that idiot propiganda. Of course, every year now, I want to bake him a little cake with a red candle in it. If enough sheep people believe something, doesn't it make it so?
