vinyl

I can understand not wanting to lose the records, though. I heard something analog not long ago, and I was struck by how different the sound was from digital. But, it's not like you guys are getting to enjoy those records, and they're so delicate! How easily vinyl breaks, scratches, and *warps*. Maybe you could convince him that they're just going to get damaged... and check around to see if some of them are worth $$$. Having music in other, space saving formats makes the most sense when you like it, but don't have an intense feeling for it. It's the same kind of difference between any-old hardcover and a old edition, or out-of-print book, that has sentimental value (even if it's just because you love the story so much).

Being alway in need of funds is a great motivator for selling CDs and books, though!
