First of all, that wasn't in the least offending, so don't worry. It's very tactful, actually.
In fact, one of the reasons I like reading your LJ (and I think I forgot to mention it in your poll, silly me) is that many times we have nearly opposite views about certain things, and you make such good arguments about them. It's nice to see different opinions from someone who takes the time to back them up. Opens your mind.
You have many good points in that rant, by the way- it's hard to find something to read in such a big fandom, with lots of "mainstream" fics focusing on the main characters (and nearly always with the same plots). Especially when, like you, one has such a clear idea of what one wants. Sure, there's always writing, but... sometimes it's nice to just read.
As for Tolkien- well, I've noticed that people tend to either love him endlessly or want to throw his books off the window. And I do believe that the movies (as much as I love them) have increased the hype a lot more than it's healthy. The thing about CCS is that Tolkien references actually fit there, so they're hard to escape...
