I personally didn't find the LJ client too helpful because it's really just a pretty interface for something that can be done just as well from the web page. To use the client you need to have an active internet connection (turned on, of course), and you need to tell it your login information. Then, you can post without having to open up your web browser and navigate to the LJ page, log in, and type your post from the update page.

I think they're all rich text based, and some of them can do cuts and usernames for you.
