Depends on which client, really. I think Lochjournal allows you to do this, but it's been a while since I used it. Also, if you use Winamp, you can use the "Detect Music" button and it grabs the info from the ID3. I stopped using it when there was this glitch which informed me of a new version, when there wasn't. (Not sure if they've fixed it yet.)
An LJ client is somewhat convenient, in that it saves a few clicks, but isn't that essential.
Personally I use Deepest Sender, which a) is a Firefox/Mozilla-only application, and b) doesn't let you compose offline. (They're working on it.) If I want to write a rant offline, I just open up Notepad.
