butterflydreaming: "Cris", in blocks with a blinking cat (Default)
153,854 words, 53 chapters, 3 years.
The longest thing I’ve ever written, fanfiction or otherwise. A complete story, beginning-middle-end, and not a romance.

In the late 80s, when I was intensely fangirling The Phantom of the Opera, my (still) BFF instigated a collaborative story, by which we brought a happily romantic ending to the Phantom's tragic story. Put it on my calendar for 2018 )

Over the last few months, I've been clocking 6,000-10,000 words per month of fanfic in 4 different fandoms . It's actually kind of hard in my hands. And it's not crap. It's sometimes crack, but good enough to post to A03. Just when I've been finishing one, I end up starting another.

The thing is, I *am* still excited to write/work on Even Angels and Stadium. I have been writing the djinn inspired short story to improve and finish it. But my time has been going to fic. For the lower bar, honestly, and the option to share-in-progress. Unlike in times past, I'm not getting upset that fic has my time. The more I write fiction of any kind, the easier it is to write.

But I've also been ultra-focused on writing and nothing else, all summer. That's just where my head is at.

For part 4 my current multi-chapter fic, I'm posting in-progress updates to this journal. The chapters will go up on Archive of Our Own and Fanfiction.net after completion.

Instead of being sequestered in her room, Elsa is sent by her parents to her Uncle and Aunt, the King and Queen of Corona. King Thomas and Queen Primrose are thunderstruck at the idea of caring for the girl, since their own daughter, Rapunzel, was kidnapped as a baby and is still missing.

Elsa and Anna write letters to each other while Elsa grows up in Corona and Anna grows up in a castle full of people and life. Away from the anxiety exacerbated by her parents, Elsa has more control of her secret ice powers.

Elsa's fate to become the Snow Queen, however, is not so easily escaped.

On AO3 because it doesn't fit in a post.

My NaNoWriMo novel has once again blurred the lines. New headcanon: the Clow Cards that manifest as sprites contain actual fairies. Since the Cards are under the jurisdiction of the four elements, and each of the cardinal directions is associated with an element, then the various fairies/faeries are from Faerie's four lands (Summer, Winter, Autumn, and Spring).

Summary: Young Clow Reed has an ambitious spell all prepared. If it goes as planned, he will command elemental power. He's confident that he can avoid the potentially catastrophic consequences of such a potent spell going out of control... even if he's the first magician to try anything like it (and even though his voice hasn't even finished changing).

I would have posted this to [profile] tsukimineshrine but the rewatch post just went up.

Apparently I needed a break from the WIP, because I sat down to nano last night and produced this fanfic instead.
butterflydreaming: Some people think I'm bitter, but I'm just intense (Kawaii_Not espresso intense)
The Pacific Rim fandom is more active on AO3 than on Fanfiction.net, which is a reversal! Over 300 fics on AO3, versus less than 100 at FF.net. Of those 300+, I swear 95% of them 'ship science nerd love. It's a bit much. Oh, fandom. {sighs}

Neither site lists any kaiju -- the antagonists of Pacific Rim -- by name or generally, as a character! And only one fic on AO3 has "kaiju" as an added tag! (One of the things I like about that archive is the ability to list non-listed characters and non-listed tags. Many fic writers use the option humorously. It adds flavor.)

So, yeah. I'm fully going to finish writing the short one from Otachi's POV. Because, I do love my kaiju. I want to hug every other-dimensional conquering super soldier monster. I want them in a basket, and wearing little bow ties, and on a rainbow, and in my bed, and I just want us to roll around.
butterflydreaming: a few crafts that I made as gifts (Get Excited Make Things)
I'm procrastinating, but honestly I don't know what these characters say to each other for the rest of the scene. Then it's a jump ahead to put spit and polish on the wedding, and I'm pretty much done.

As in ending. The End. {freaks out and flails}

I've spent ten years with this story. ( Insert scene from Grosse Point Blank, which is what I think of every time.) The only thing it beats out as a WIP is Key, and that doesn't have nearly as many words on it. This is the story that I wanted to do so much that I wouldn't abandon it. There was always a next-chapter draft in a folder on whatever computer I was using, even when I went four years without updating.

The procrastination is kind of funny, actually. Get up, water. Get up, bathroom. Get up, Farmers Market. Make lunch, eat lunch. Pet the cat. Change clothes. Water. Internet.

I'm going to finish it today, and if so post it today, and if so... say goodbye today. *weeps*

Title: "Parasol" On AO3 At the Pit of Voles
As I recall, the Monet painting Woman with a Parasol was a prompt. The fic is strongly inspired by "Parasol" by Tori Amos, which I have always felt was a song for Sonomi and Nadeshiko. This story takes place the summer before Sonomi's wedding.

Summary: A rift between families is sustained by both sides. (Pre-canon)

What I learned from completing this fic: I think that I must have initially set this aside because it was a nothing story, one where Sonomi went to tell her cousin of the upcoming wedding. She sees Nadeshiko's son Touya for the first time. (And?!?) Coming back to it to finish it even if it was a nothing story meant figuring out how to get the characters to engage with me. They were happy to engage with each other. Before I knew it, they were getting scrappy!

Writing with restrictions is good for me. Sonomi is a difficult character. It's her POV and I wanted her to be sympathetic. In canon, she is a single mother, a business woman, athletic, competitive, and off-putting. In canon, her clumsy cousin Nadeshiko (deceased in canon present) is cute and sweet, a bad cook and a gentle mother. I've been writing N in "TC" for ages now, thinking about what made her tick, and I write her fallible. She is sometimes oblivious, often unwise, impulsive, and a little selfish. This fic dropped both of them together with the inspiration of an emotion-filled song that I could not allude to because S's POV is not lyrical.

I still think that it ends somewhat abruptly. However, that is OK for a vignette that no one will read besides me anyway.

I've started turning my chapter fics into ePub and Mobi format. These are, of course, free. The files are on public Dropbox. You can find them here: Fanfic ebook page.

Enjoy if so inclined!

There are times when my head gets too crowded.

Since I have been here on DW, cross posting to LJ, I have returned to thinking of myself as butterflydreaming. I just realized that I've disconnected with SaV -- that is to say, I see my shadow_and_veil journal on LJ and it feels remote. That's not me.

Y'know, that's actually a good thing. Cut to spare you nattering )

OMG, the things that turn up when you're looking for something else.

I once started writing a sequel to two of my oddest (and that is saying something) fanfics for Card Captor Sakura. I titled it "Meeting As if By Chance," got in 4,000 words, and then forgot about it. It's... astounding.

The first fic was one called "Matters of Chance," and it was done for an "original character" challenge. My OC was an estranged cousin to the canon's main character's late mother; the story took place during the time when the main character's parents met. Her name was Kikuu, and she was a Japanese girl from Los Angeles. She had the magic ability to influence chance and fate.

The second fic was "Hunger," set in an alternative universe in which -- challenge requirement -- one of the primary canon characters did not exist. I removed the main character (Sakura) as well as her older brother. Her mother lived, and the new magic girl was the third child. In this fic, my favorite character, Yue, doesn't get the gift of magic that lets him live, because there is no brother to give it to him. Instead, he takes it from a weaker source -- the mother -- and it beaten bloody by the magic girl (Yuriko). The story ends on a note of doom for Yue, as he flees from Yuriko, still starving for the magic power that he needs.

"Meeting As if By Chance" picks up at the end of "Hunger." I know at the time that I couldn't leave AU Yue to that ending. I didn't finish the fic... possibly because it happened around the time of a lot of chaos for me, possibly because it only bears the slightest relationship to canon.

Anyway. Here it is.

Intended to be the penultimate chapter: 27. At least a third of the ending chapter is already written. I've had big chunks of the ending since 2005 or so.

I didn't want to skip the opportunity to write, but I didn't want to write anything serious, so I dug out the drafted chapter of an unfinished fanfic ("Take Comfort"). As it turns out, I had quite a bit of usable material written. I moved things into new combinations and filled out the segues. Now I have half a chapter (about 3K words).

But fluffy, it is not. I had managed to forget how much this story is about grieving and how much this section, specifically. I particularly liked the idea of "five stages of joy" that one character considers. grief is not a marathon )

Hey, that's my fanfic that TV Tropes is using as example of songfic. (Cardcaptor Sakura, "The Universe is Resting in My Arms.") Ha!

I discovered this because FF.net has just informed me that it's a violation of guidelines and has been removed. (This, after eight years.) The link from TVTropes.org still works as of a few minutes ago. I'm not sure if I should do anything about any of this.
